Dr. Shalabh Sharma

Dr. Shalabh Sharma is presently practicing as a Senior Ear, Nose &Throat Consultant Surgeon at Sir Ganga Ram hospital in New Delhi.

Dr. Shalabh Sharma completed his Masters in ENT from the Manipal Academy of Higher Education in 1994 and was also conferred the Diplomate of the National Board of Examinations in ENT in 1995.

He spent some time as a Clinical Fellow at the Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, Ireland and Royal Victoria hospital, Belfast (UK). He obtained his Diploma in Laryngology and Otology (DLO) from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1996 and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland (FRCS) in 1997. He has received advanced training in endoscopic sinus surgery and ear microsurgery.

Dr Sharma's area of expertise is Deafness in children & adults. He received training in Cochlear Implantation at the ‘Bionic Ear Institute’ at Melbourne, Australia in 2001. Subsequently he started the Cochlear Implant Unit at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in 2002 and has performed over 700 cochlear implant surgeries till date. This includes a large number of cases with abnormal cochleae, abnormalities of the facial nerve and many other challenging cases. There have been NO complications in any of the patients. Most of the children are already attending normal schools. His youngest implantee is 8 months old and the oldest is 87 years old. Dr. Sharma uses the Posterior Tympanotomy approach for inserting the electrode, which is the recognized technique, used by 99% of the cochlear implant surgeons the world over. He is Director of the Cochlear Implant Program at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. He has a special interest in Cochlear Implant Surgery in the abnormal cochlea, a topic on which he has been invited to lecture at many International & National Conferences. He has also personally trained other ear surgeons in the art of Cochlear Implant Surgery, and has performed Implant Surgery at many Live Surgery Workshops to teach the ENT surgeons present. 

Dr. Sharma also has an interest in the treatment of nasal and sinus disorders. He is one of the leading surgeons in India using the Balloon Sinuplasty minimally invasive technique to treat sinus disease successfully. He performed the Balloon Sinuplasty for the 1st time in 2008 and has on of the largest series in India of sinusitis cases treated with Balloon sinuplasty. He also has expertise with the Airway Balloon, which is used to dilate the constricted laryuse and trachea, in cases of subglottic stenosis and tracheal stenosis.

 

He has also personally trained other ear surgeons (from India and abroad) in the art of Cochlear Implant Surgery, and has demonstrated implant surgeries at many live surgery workshops to teach the ENT surgeons present.

Dr. Shalabh Sharma’s name has been included in the Limca book of records (2002 edition) for pioneering endoscopic surgery of a life threatening nasal and sinus tumor.

Dr. Sharma also has a special interest in middle ear reconstructive surgeries including the use of Titanium middle ear prosthesis, especially in difficult cases such as Ossicular destruction, Adhesive Otitis media, Cholesteatoma etc. Dr. Sharma performs most of his surgeries as a single stage procedure, that s disease removal, eardrum reconstruction and ossicular reconstruction is all carried out in a single surgery. This saves the patient from many multiple staged procedures.
